DEBATE FORMAT

 

Name listed first is affirmative. Name listed second is negative

 

Constructive (5-8 minutes): The speaker gives the main argument in support of the assigned position. Use the document assigned. Directly quote your source to prove your point. Use your own arguments and additional sources to make the case. The focus of the speech should be why your side is right and NOT why their side is wrong.

 

Rebuttal (2-3 minutes): The speaker challenges the case made by the opposition. Directly quote statements made by your opponent in his constructive  case and tell why those statements are wrong or do not matter.. Here is where you point out the flaws in the logic and facts of the other side. New facts in support of your  position may be introduced here to aid in the rebuttal of the oppositionÕs case.

 

Examination: During the examination half of the class will be assigned to ask supportive questions and half the job of posing challenging questions of the speaker whose case was just rebutted. The teacher will also question.
